Nikon D5 (and Nikon 200-500mm lens, etc.) on Sanibel Island

This is NOT a review! I picked up my D5 (Dual XQD version) and a new Nikon 200-500mm lens, drove home, then jumped on a plane headed for Sanibel Island, FL. I downloaded the D5 manual to my iPhone and was able to go through it some on the flight. The flight also gave me time to enter my copyright information and make all of my normal personal settings.

Passengers

Passengers: 1/125 second, F2.8, ISO 1100. Nikon D5 – Nikon 24-70mm lens. I snapped off a few test shots on my porch before heading to the airport, then took a few along the way. For this shot, I just held it up over my head and took few images.

There will be a lot of people doing detailed evaluations and reviews. I am simply taking similar images I would have taken with my D4 or D810 and then processing them the same as I might have with the other bodies and lenses. Photos on this page are not heavily processed, but they are processed. Adobe included a new version of Adobe Camera Raw in the latest update, capable of reading the new D5 raw files.

Of interest: The new D5 shipped with a Sony G Series card reader an a new Series G 32 Gig XQD card. That’s great! It seems to be very fast. However, my older Sony Series S (64 gig card) and my Lexar 1333x (200mbs) would not read in the new card reader.

Dallas Tiles

Dallas Tiles: 1/100 Second, F/5, ISO 3600. Nikon D5 – Nikon 24-70mm lens. We had a stop in Dallas, TX. I walked around taking a few hand held shots. These are part of a tile graphic.

Dallas Escalator

Dallas Escalator: 1/100 Second, F/5, ISO 2200. Nikon D5 – Nikon 24-70mm lens.

Outbound from Dallas

Outbound from Dallas: 1/16oth Secod. F/3.5, ISO 102400. Nikon D5 – Nikon 24-70mm lens. Yes…it has noise…but it is ISO 102400!

Dallas Airport

Dallas Airport: 1/160 Second, F/5, ISO 450. Nikon D5 – Nikon 24-70mm lens. Taken through the airport window.

Sanibel Lighthouse and Moon

Sanibel Lighthouse and Moon: 1/40 Second, F/13, ISO 140. Nikon D5 – Nikon 24-70mm lens. It wasn’t a particularly great sunrise the first morning.

Decorative Brick

Decorative Brick: 1/40 Second, F/9, ISO 1100. Nikon D5 – Nikon 24-70mm lens.

Beachcomber

Beachcomber: 1/400, F/11, ISO 640.  Nikon D5 & Nikon 200-400m Lens. I saw a couple of Pileated Woodpeckers in the area, so I switched to the new Nikon 200-500mm lens. I haven’t done any AF Fine Tuning yet…but the combination looks pretty good right out of the box.

Floating Brown Pelican

Floating Brown Pelican: 1/800 Second, F/11 ISO 900 . Nikon D5 & Nikon 200-400m Lens. Some of the first birds I could find were Brown Pelicans.

Brown Pelican Taking Off

Brown Pelican Taking Off: 1/1000 Second, F/11, ISO 1400. Nikon D5 & Nikon 200-400m Lens.

In Flight

In Flight:  1/1000 Second, F/11, ISO 1400. Nikon D5 & Nikon 200-400m Lens.  I believe I had the camera set to Group Area Focus for these Pelican shots.

Pileated Woodpecker

Pileated Woodpecker: 1/1000 Second, F/11, ISO 5600. Nikon D5 & Nikon 200-400m Lens. (Note: I was shooting in Manual Mode with Auto ISO) This female woodpecker was tapping on a light post. I took a few photos of it with plenty of light. It then flew into the darker canopy nearby. I probably should have made the adjustment before entering the area, but it is nice to know I have a reasonable chance of getting a good, useable shot at higher ISO settings.

Shorebirds

Shorebirds: 1/1000 Second, F/11, ISO 560.  Nikon D5 & Nikon 200-400m Lens. I can’t remember the name of these birds. They were clustered together, so I focused on just one of them, and took the shot handheld at 500mm with the VR turned on.

Resting Pelican

Brown Pelican: 1/1000 Second, F/9, ISO 220. Nikon D5 & Nikon 200-400m Lens.

This will be an ongoing Journal of images taken here in Sanibel Island, FL. Check back! I’ll add images regularly throughout the week, including different combinations of lenses and bodies.
