Nostalgic Captures of the Northern Rockies!

…and Comments on Disappearing Americana

Cross country travelers merge onto an Interstate Highway, then speed along at 70-80 mph to get to their destination. That’s easy to understand knowing highways are usually more efficient—and for some, “time is money”. For others, slowing down or taking the side roads has intrinsic value—even if the benefits are less obvious. It is easy to observe how our modernized world is becoming more and more homogenized. One highway exit often resembles the last highway exit, often consisting of one or more chain gas stations, at least one convenience store, and several fast food restaurants. Businessmen and administrators at forward thinking towns tear down the old to make way for the new, but in doing so, strip some of the local character and ambiance away. They do it in the name of progress. At 65, I admit I am a bit nostalgic about where we came from and how we got here, and I am not as much enthused as I should be about where things seem to be headed. Still, I realize the benefits of change. I wrote this post on a state-of-the-art computer and posted it to the Internet over a high speed Wi-Fi connection. The pages and photos will be sent from servers to satellites circling the globe and beamed to readers using a variety of high tech devices. It is easy to be conflicted! The Spud Continue reading "Nostalgic Captures of the Northern Rockies!"

January Notes:
January is a sneaky month. I suppose someone could find all kinds of negative things to say about it, such as “It’s very cold!” or “There’s not much open!” Actually, both statements are correct, but for anyone willing to brave the cold and explore, January can be a great month for photography and touring the area. 17.2 Miles to Go 3.3 Miles in Grand Teton National Park!

Time to keep 2.5 miles of Antelope Flats Road open year-around.

When Darla and I moved to Jackson Hole 32 years ago, the old saying was: “Between Labor Day and Memorial Day, you could shoot a canon down Broadway or Cache and not hit anyone or anything.” Turn the calendar to 2018 and you’ll immediately notice that things have changed. Jackson Hole is not as “remote” as it might have been decades ago. Airports, hotels, and winter activities are catering to ever increasing winter crowds. Tourists are more demanding, more worldly, and more mobile with their 4-wheel drive SUVs and trucks. I’ve personally witnessed this change! A 2.5 mile section of Antelope Flats Road has been closed during the winter months since we moved here. I suspect it has been closed for decades before our arrival—probably dating back to 1943 when the eastern portion was established as the Jackson Hole National Monument then later included in Grand Teton National Park. Early December Notes

Erine With few exceptions, December is a “white month” in Jackson Hole. Heavy snow covers the mountain ranges and begins to blanket much of the valley floor. Ski resorts open and tourists return to take advantage of the white, fluffy powder. Days are short and often cold, but the low sun and reflected light often allows for all day shooting for photographers. December is a great time for winter landscapes. Many of the roads are closed, but enough are open to make it worth a trip into the park and around the valley. Continue reading "December 2018 Daily Journal for GTNP & JH"
